One of the most well-known low-molecular non-enzymatic antioxidants is vitamin E. In this paper authors reviewed the literature regarding vitamin E activity and the possibility of using it in selected disease entities after external application as well as oral use. The analysis of available review, research and casuistic publications showed the effectiveness of vitamin E in cosmetics use, allergic diseases, prophylaxis and support for the treatment of certain cancers, also treatment of male infertility, scars and wound healing abnormalities. Authors described the compounds from the group of vitamin E and its derivatives most commonly used in the cosmetic preparations. The number of well-constructed research works on the action of vitamin E applied externally is unfortunately very limited, which indicates the need for further research in this subject. This will enable the verification of knowledge based largely on traditional use in given disease units. Key words: tocopherols, tocotrienols, non-enzymatic antioxidants, low molecular antioxidants |
