Preservatives must be safe for the user at the recommended concentrations. They should not disturb the natural microflora of the skin or penetrate it. When selecting a preservative, take into account the cosmetic´s recipe, its intended use and the type of packaging. Important parameters here are, among others water activity and the pH of the cosmetic. Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze the use of preservatives in cleaning preparations available on the Polish market. Materials and methods. An analysis of preservatives from the official list, listed on 150 labels available on the Polish market of cleansing cosmetics, was carried out. The obtained results were compared with the results of analogous studies conducted 6 years ago. Results. A significant change in the profile of the preservatives used was found, mainly towards the introduction of raw materials considered by the general public as organic. There has also been an almost complete abandonment of the use of parabens. It was found that the leading preservative is Sodium Benzoate, listed in 58% of the products. Conclusions. There are no attempts to select a preservative system for a recipe, manufacturers have their ´favorite´ substances that are used in all recipes of a given brand.
