Introduction. Chemical peels are very popular in cosmetology and dermatology. Salicylic acid is one of the most common chemical peels and due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and keratolytic properties is commonly used in the therapy of acne vulgaris, especially comedonal type. It is effective in reduction of skin defects such as wrinkles, scars, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Aim. The aim of this research was to assess the effectiveness of series of salicylic acid peel in the reduction of acne vulgaris.
Material and methods. A 21-year-old woman with acne vulgaris was tested. Black and whiteheads, pustules and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation were observed on the face. Four treatments with 25% salicylic acid were performed at 14 to 21 days intervals.
Results. After a series of treatments, a significant improvement in the patient´s skin condition was observed. The number of blackheads and pustules was reduced and the skin tone was improved. The best results were achieved in the blackheads and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation reduction.
Conclusions. Salicylic acid is effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris, especially comedonal acne. It is often used because of its wide spectrum of action, good toleration by the skin and small risk of complications.
