Cosmetic properties of citrus fruits - part I. Fruit flesh

Summary
Citruses are a popular group of varieties of exotic rutaceous plants. Citrus fruits are mainly known for their high content of vitamins, especially vitamin C with antioxidant properties, but also it contains vitamins B, folates and numerous minerals. The presence of dietary fiber and flavonoids is also significant. Especially the flesh of these fruits is extremely rich in valuable biologically active ingredients. For example, it is thought that regular consumption of citrus fruit may contribute to lowering LDL cholesterol and homocysteine levels, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, the presence of vitamin C helps to strengthen blood vessels and improve the functioning of the immune system. In addition to the undoubted nutritional and health benefits of the possibility of direct consuming citrus fruits, there are also valuable uses in cosmetics. Among others, using preparations with the addition of e.g. extracts from oranges, cellulite can be significantly reduced. Such cosmetics also have a cleansing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. An important feature is their ability to improve skin elasticity, its use can reduce spots and discoloration. Extracts from various parts of citrus fruit are found in many commercial cosmetic preparations. However, also at home it is possible to prepare a citrus cosmetic for daily care.
