Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of proteolytic enzymes, that are involved in degradation of extracellular matrix proteins, i.a. collagen and elastin. Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases are the endogenous regulators of metalloproteinases activities, but as a result of UV radiation, their expression is increased, which is the main pathogenetic phenomenom in the photoaging. The paper presents the mechanism of action of metalloproteinases and their tissue inhibitors and discusses their participation in photoaging process. Key words: matrix metalloproteinases, tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases, photoaging, UV radiation |
