Social perception of the profession of cosmetologist

Summary
Introduction. The profession of cosmetologist is a relatively young speciality and has its roots in cosmetics shaped over the past centuries. The cosmetologist´s profession is not widely known to the public, but people know who the beautician is. The consequence of this may be the fact that a lot of cosmetologists perform the profession of a beautician. The cosmetologists work in beauty salons, beauty studios or spa, where beauticians are also hired. This led to the disappearance of the differences between these two professions.
Aim. The aim of the study was to determine how the profession of cosmetologist is perceived by society.
Material and methods. The study was conducted on the basis of an author-created anonymous questionnaire distributed via the website. 252 adults of both sexes took part in the study after giving their consent.
Results. The vast majority of respondents met with a cosmetologist profession - 91.3%. The collected data indicate that almost 70% of the respondents know what the cosmetologist does and what the scope of his duties is. Nearly 66% of the respondents said they could distinguish the beautician profession from the profession of cosmetologist. The vast majority of respondents stated that specialist qualifications are needed to perform the profession of cosmetologist, 67% of respondents chose the answer saying that higher education is necessary to perform the profession of cosmetologist.
Conclusions. Currently, a large part of the society has a lot of knowledge about the profession of cosmetologist. They are aware of the role cosmetologist plays. Tthey know also the characteristics of the profession and competences. In addition, despite the blurring of the border between the profession of beautician and cosmetologist, the majority of respondents participating in the study know the difference between these two professions. Nowadays, the profession of cosmetologist has become popular and socially needed.
