Chemical compounds of mushroom and their use in cosmetologyKatarzyna Sułkowska-Ziaja, Aleksandra Laszczak, Bożena Muszyńska Chair and Department of Pharmaceutical Botany, Faculty of Pharmacy, Jagiellonian University Medical College, Kraków Summary The paper presents the current state of knowledge on the use of mushroom origin compounds in cosmetology. The first part of the paper constitutes a review of the most important species of higher fungi, representing Basidiomycota and Ascomycota phylum, used in the production of cosmetic preparations. The species were characterized taking into account the habitat and distribution, morphology, chemical composition of fruiting bodies and their cosmetology value. The next part contains the characteristics of the most important chemical of mushroom origin compounds applicable in cosmetology (such as polysaccharides, carotenoids, fatty acids, trehalose, ergothioneine, superoxide dismutase, tyrosinase inhibitors). The description of the compounds includes their chemical structure, physicochemical properties, occurrence in nature, biological properties as well as cosmetic and therapeutic applications. Key words: medicinal mushrooms, polysaccharides, antioxidants, cosmetics |
