Summary
In this work the natters of application of radioactive compounds in cosmetic products in the first half of the twentieth were described. Described initial fascination of researchers and consumers in discovery of radioactivity and detection of its miraculous activity on human health. A number of examples of cosmetic products containing radioactive compounds were shown, described their composition and use. Product characteristics include: lines of cosmetics brands Tho-Radia, Caradium and Radior, toothpaste ´Doramad´, radioactive rejuvenating cream ´Artes Radium Cream´ and hands cleaner ´Radium Hand Cleaner´. Presented the attitude towards radioactive cosmetics of Polish researchers of the interwar period and showed an example of the use of radioactive products in Poland in the general treatment of health problems (Sól Rado-Jodowa Galen Company). Quoted also examples of cosmetic products prepared on order in cosmetic drugstores, which in its composition contained radioactive elements. In the final part of the paper presented the current legal regulations in the European Union and in Poland regarding the prohibition of adding radioactive substances to cosmetic products. Fashion on the use of radioactive compounds in cosmetics is a perfect example of what can happen when society is very interested in scientific progress without paying attention to their own health.
