Summary
Semisolid emulsion bases are commonly used as carriers of active substances in both drugs and cosmetics. The careful design of the semisolid base enables to achieve an effective active substances delivery to the skin. The effectiveness of emulsion semisolid formulations is influenced by many factors including: a concentration of the dissolved form of the active substance, an emulsion type, a type and a concentration of emulsifiers used, water and oil phase ratio, a size of internal phase droplets, semisolid base viscosity as well as the presence of cutaneous absorption promoters and base ability to hydrate the stratum corneum.

Key words: emulsion, skin delivery, semisolid bases
