Katowice Summary Introduction. An important element of skin care is its proper hydration and lubrication. One the cosmetic type, aimed to maintaining hydro-lipid balance in the epidermis, are emulsions. Plant extracts, used as components with a wide range of activity, are especially valuable in their recipes. One of the raw materials of plant origin is cranberry. The extract obtained therefrom is characterized by a high content of bioactive compounds, including antioxidants, vitamins and mineral salts, having beneficial effect on the condition and appearance of skin. Aim. The aim of the study was to determine the application possibilities of the cranberry extract in facial care products. Material and methods. Base recipe has been developed and preparations in the form of O/W emulsions containing cranberry extract with the previously defined content of active components have been made. Some investigations including the measurement of dynamic viscosity and pH, as well as determination of peroxide value, for the products prepared in the Laboratory of Cosmetic Raw Materials, Institute of General Food Chemistry, Technical University of Lodz, have also been performed. Moreover, the research covered sensory and hedonistic analysis of the cosmetic preparations. Results. The addition of cranberry extract ensures antioxidant stability of the prescription preparation in the form of O/W emulsion. This component exerts certain influence on such physicochemical parameters as dynamic viscosity and pH of the cosmetic. Consumers´ feedback after application of the product as well as its overall evaluation including its content are positive. Conclusions. The research conducted indicates that the cranberry extract can be used as a natural antioxidant effectively protecting cosmetic products, which also provides good cosmetic results.
