Besides the fact that it has a beneficial effect on living organisms, it also causes many adverse effects. Excessive exposure to solar radiation negatively determines the appearance of the skin. The article discusses the immediate and long-time effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin. Presented are: erythema and burns, classified as sharp after sun reactions, as well as chronic actinic damage, namely: photoaging, lesions and skin cancer. One of the ways to minimize the negative effects of excessive sun exposure, is photoprojection. In this respect it included the skin´s natural defenses to protect against UV radiation such as urokain acid and melanin, and filters, which are artificial substances. Featured are primarily photo protectors with their chemical and physical properties. Another factor raised is the problem of the consequences arising from improper exposure to sun and the rules of proper use of sunscreen. The problem of safe tanning is considered in the context of the risks posed to the exposure of the skin to UV radiation taking into account the principles of safe sun exposure.
