Summary
The interest of people in their appearance is associated with attention to the hair as hair is one of the modern attributes of attractiveness. This interest resulted in the development of trichology. The area of interest of trichology covers hair and scalp of the head. This article identifies current trends in development of trychology in Poland and initiates scientific discussion on trichology and profession of trichologist. Therefore the factors influencing the development of the trichology and profession of trichologist in our country were pointed out. The conceptual ambiguity of the profession creates semantic confusion therefore concepts of profession and specialization were confronted and verified in the context of trichology. As a result of discussions synthetic profile of trichologist profession was developed. Significant differences between medical and non-medical trichology were pointed out in the area of dysfunction of hair and scalp. As a result of that names for trichology specialties were proposed trichology, medical trichology and cosmetology trichology (preventive conservative). Introduction of the nomenclature would allow separating curative treatments of from care treatment from the area of trichology. Conditions essential to complete the formation of the profession and specialty of trichologist were pointed out. The sine qua non condition needed to form mature identity of profession trichologist is suitable system of schools and universities which will prepare trichologist for work. According to the author, the attempts to create such a system are currently observed. However there is a need for in depth empirical studies indicating the specific character of education and professional practice of trichologists. This requires an interdisciplinary research methodology.
