Assessment of appearance of scars after parotid glands´ tumors resection

Summary
Introduction. Parotid glands diseases, such as benign and malignant tumors and sialolithiasis are eligible for surgery. Due to the increasing interest in the quality of life of the patient constantly new surgical skin approaches are searched, to provide patients satisfaction with underwent surgery treatment in the face region.
Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the appearance of the face and scars after tumor removals of the parotid glands.
Material and methods. The group consisted of 18 patients treated surgically for malignant and non-malignant tumors in the parotid glands from January 1972 to December 1999. In the group of patients the prevalence of local postoperative complications and the appearance of the scar after surgery was examined. The observation period was completed in December 2015 the average duration was 20.3±17.1 years (from one year to 43 years).
Results. Histopathology examination confirmed benign tumor in 88.9% cases. In the entire group 18 patients the following complications were reported: inflammation (3 persons), palsy of marginal branch of the facial nerve (3 persons), salivary fistula (1 person) VII nerve palsy (1 person). No recurrence of tumor was diagnosed in anyone from 18 patients.
Conclusions. Evaluation of face appearance and scars is an important factor in the assessment of the results of surgical treatment of patients with tumors of the parotid glands. In case of removal benign tumors good aesthetic effects of surgery are achieved.
