Summary
Introduction. Recent developments have highlighted the growing importance of "naturalness" for consumers. Natural plant extracts rich in vitamins and polyphenolic compounds are good antioxidants can be applied in cosmetic industry for prolonging the stability of cosmetic products as well as help retard microbial contamination. Many cosmetic brands have changed their products profile for more eco-labeled and started to added natural plant extracts to the cream´s emulsion.
Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of eco creams with only natural plant extracts (carrot, tomato and pomegranate) and compare their to the creams with ´natural" declaration and containing artificial preservatives produced by the same producer.
Methods. Quantification was done on the basis of their antioxidant activity; lipid oxidation index and the efficacy of preservative system against microbiological contamination during one month of shelf-life were determined.
Results. Based on the TEAC values marked differences in antioxidant activity of tested creams delivered by various producers were demonstrated. The TEAC values of selected natural creams decrease in range 10-40% depending on the plant extract addition. After one month of staying in room temperature lipid oxidation index increase significantly in creams with all "eco" creams. The challenge test showed differentiated efficacy of natural preservatives contained in tested creams.
