Summary
Buddleja davidii is one of the species of genus Buddleja, commonly used as an ornamental plant with a wide range of colour varieties. It is also called "butterfly bush" or "summer lilac". Phytochemical analysis of the raw material enables to identify the presence of biologically active compounds, which determine its pharmacological as well as cosmetic properties. Iridoid monoterpenes (aucubin, catalpol) and flavonoids (linarin) influence the acceleration of the wound healing process through the synergistic anti-inflammatory and antioxidative action. In turn, diterpenes (buddlejone, maytenone) and primarily one of the sesquiterpenes - buddledin A have antimicrobial properties, especially antifungal activity against soil fungi and dermatophytes. Verbascoside is one of the phenylpropanoid glycosides. It is a crucial compound, which has antibacterial properties and acts as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory reagent. It may provide a useful therapeutic strategy for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson´s disease. What is more, it also has the ability to protect DNA in keratinocytes against oxidative stress induced by UV radiation. Luteolin (compound belonging to flavonoids) shows promising potential as adjuvant in the treatment of gastric and breast cancer.
