Summary
Many health problems can be related to the pollution of natural environment, pollution of food, improper eating habits, stress and free radicals attacking our organisms. These factors make serious threats to correct functioning of human organisms. The damaging effect of free radicals can be inhibited by antioxidants that either prevent the formation of free radicals or stimulate their transformation into inactive derivatives. Carotenoids belong to the strongest antioxidants. Free radicals also exert negative effect on human skin and facilitate its ageing. Cosmetic industry has been for a long time interested in natural active antioxidants slowing down the skin ageing and improving general condition of the skin. This paper presents a survey of literature on the use of carotenoids in cosmetic industry.

Key words: carotenoids, antioxidant, β-carotene
