Summary
Retinoids are a class of chemical compounds that are related chemically to vitamin A. Their cosmetic activity encompasses epidermis, dermis and oil glands. They have many various and vital functions such as regulation of proliferation and diversification of cells and vision. They also play an important role in proper functioning of the immune system. The activity of retinol and its derivatives is possible due to receptors of nucleus´ membrane and binding proteins. All of them are compounds of low durability, easily oxydated. However, taking into account present development of cosmetic forms and progress in the field of chemistry or pharmacy, retinoids´ application stands a chance of becoming more widespread.

Key words: retinol, retinoids, vitamin A, retinoid derivatives, beta-karotene, skin, anti-ageing
