Implementation of the educational program "Healthy breasts are OK!" in the prevention of breast cancer among cosmetology students

Summary
Introduction. Due to their competences cosmetologists could perform tasks in the field of breast cancer prevention, including inspire clients to greater independence and responsibility for their own health, motivate them to healthy behavior, in particular by promoting knowledge in the field of preventive examinations and self breast health. Implementation of these tasks requires from cosmetologists knowledge, skills and competencies that can be extended by including to the program of education the objectives of the breast cancer prevention program "Healthy breasts are ok".
Aim. Analysis of the effects of the implementation of the educational program "Healthy breasts are ok!" among students of cosmetology, as future specialist in the field of breast cancer prevention.
Materials and methods. Full-time student majoring in cosmetology at the Faculty of Health Sciences WSIiZ in Warsaw were researched. Educational activities in the area of breast care and beautification were supplemented with the content of "Healthy breasts are OK!" program. The supplemented educational program was delivered to 72 students of IV semester and 69 students of VI semester. The knowledge of students was verified with questionnaires before and after the education. The study used two research tools - evaluation questionnaires, developed by the author of the program.
Results. Prior to the education program delivered to the students, their knowledge was already quite high. The percentage of correct answers was at the level of 75,1% for the fourth semester and 80.3% for the sixth semester. After the educational activities the percentage increased to 98.3% and 98.6% respectively. This represented an increase of 31% knowledge for the students of fourth semester and 23% growth for the students of sixth semester.
Conclusions. Results encouraged to pursue activities in the field of care and beautification of the breast in consecutive semesters (full-time and part-time) in a similar, improved formula including elements of "Healthy breasts are ok!" program.
