Summary
Acne is a most common chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit resulting from androgen-induced increased sebum production altered keratinization, inflammatory and bacterial colonization of hair follicles on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back by Propionibacterium acnes. Acne most often begins in puberty. There is no ideal treatment for acne, although a suitable regimen for reducing lesions can be found for most patients. The most common treatment include the topical use of comedolytics and antimicrobial agents and the topical or systemic use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives and retinoids. Retinoids, an oral drug, may be prescribed for individuals with severe, cystic, inflammatory acne that cannot be effectively treated by other methods. Although acne often is a chronic condition, even if it lasts only during adolescence, can leave life-long scars. Proper treatment for acne may help minimize scarring. A very important element of the complementary treatment of acne by a dermatologist is the proper skin care in beauty salon and the patient´s home.
