The combination therapy combining two types of stimuli, i.e. ultrasounds and pulse currents, is used mainly to reduce the sensation of pain, relax muscles and improve blood tissue supply. Apart from its therapeutic effect, the procedure can affect adipose tissue and other body components including muscle tissue. Aim. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of a series of six treatments of combination therapy to change the mass of adipose tissue and muscle in slightly overweight young women. Methods. A total of 23 women aged 19-25 years and with a BMI of 26.1 were examined. Before and after a series of treatments, the weight and waist, hip and thigh circumference values were measured. Also the amount of adipose tissue and other body components was examined with the use of the STA/BIA RJL - Akern 101/S device, tetrapolar version (Italy). The treatmentsconsisted of six forty-minute sessions of combined therapy on the back of the thigh using the Mesotherapy Ultra System camera manufactured by Rubica (Poland). Results. The lower limb circumference values of the subjects have decreased significantly. The amount of adipose tissue decreased by an average of 0.9 kg, and average muscle mass increased by 1.5 kg. The use of combination therapy treatment reduces the amount of adipose tissue, but has no effect on the change in body weight as fat loss was offset by gains in muscle mass. Conclusions. The use of combination therapy treatment may be used in body shaping due to the double effect, i.e. the fat reduction and simultaneous stimulation of muscles, and thereby increase in muscle mass, which may be used not only in rehabilitation but also in cosmetology or aesthetic medicine.
