Cosmetic properties of hinokitiol

Summary
Hinokitiol (β-thujaplicin) is not commonly used in cosmetology but due to the wide range of properties and scientifically proven biological activity of this compound tt is worth to get to know it better. In vitro studies have shown that hinokitiol exhibit antiradical, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Due to the ability to chelate polyvalent metal ions hinokitiol has antioxidant properties, and also affects on the metal-dependent enzymes activity. In addition, in vivo studied indicated that hinokitiol reduce the occurrence of the skin photodamage caused by UVB radiation. For this reason, in modern cosmetology hinokitiol can be used in skin care products, anti-staining cosmetics, toothpastes and hair and scalp preparations.
