Summary
Centella asiatica is now being increasingly used in cosmetology and dermatology products. Its popularity is primarily associated with the presence of active ingredients from the group of pentacyclic triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids and phenolic acids with proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Centella asiatica is also used in the treatment of hypertrophic wounds, burns, psoriasis, and scleroderma. It has been shown that formulations with Centella asiatica can stimulate the proliferation of fibroblasts and activate the Smad signaling pathway proteins, contributing to the increase in the concentration of fibronectin and collagen types I and III, as well as reduce the aging process of the skin and reducing the formation of stretch marks and inflammatory reactions. In addition, the components isolated from C. asiatica affect on the microcirculation of blood in the skin and have a protective effect on the walls of blood vessels by improving their flexibility. In cosmetology Centella asiatica is also used in the anticellulite formulations. Centella asiatica active ingredients prevent excess fat accumulation in adipocytes, activating lipolysis through inhibition of the phosphodiesterase activity. The broad spectrum properties of Centella asiatica makes it successfully used in cosmetology and dermatology.
