Summary
In recent years, a systematic trend of replacement of substances non present in the nature by the natural ones is observed in the cosmetic industry. This is not only the result of eco-cosmetics fashion, but also there is a need to reduce emissions of substances that may in the long term contribute to environmental degradation. For this reason, legal restrictions on the use of many popular preservatives (eg. parabens) were introduced due to their ability to irreversible destroying of bacterial flora in watercourses.
Potential substitutes may be found within species having a similar properties and included in the essential oils naturally occurring in the environment. In addition to the antifungal and antibacterial properties they are most often recognized as substances characterized by an appealing fragrance. Unfortunately, in higher concentrations or long-term application, they also exhibit irritating properties of the skin and mucous.
The aim of the study was to find and collect data on the raw materials, the organoleptic properties, chemical composition and biological activity of several commonly known essential oils conventionally separated from plants of Lamiaceae family. These information may be a clue to the selection of natural substances that may commonly act as a preservative and flavoring agents in just formulated cosmetics.
