The importance of the selected species of the Malvaceae family in cosmetologyKatarzyna Antropik 1/, Ewa Ignatowicz 2/, Irena Matławska 1,3/ 1/ Katedra i Zakład Farmakognozji, Uniwersytet Medyczny w Poznaniu 2/ Katedra Biochemii Farmaceutycznej Uniwersytet Medyczny w Poznaniu 3/ Katedra i Zakład Farmakognozji, Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu, Collegium Medicum w Bydgoszczy Summary Species of the Malvaceae family, such as marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), wild mallow (Malva sylvestris), kenaf butternut squash (Hibiscus abelmoschus) and Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), provide abundance of raw materials, which are used not only in medicine but also as active ingredients in cosmetic preparations. Beneficial properties of these raw materials are associated with the presence of biologically active phytochemicals, which include mainly the mucilages, flavonoids and other phenolic compounds. Only few scientific reports confirm, so far, important activities of the extracts and isolated active compounds of Malvaceae. Key words: mucilages, Malvaceae, cosmetology |
