Hydroquione derivaties as skin bleaching agentsJacek Arct, Justyna Mirocha, Katarzyna Pytkowska Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa Kosmetyki i Pielęgnacji Zdrowia w Warszawie Summary Hydroquinone, used for many years in dermatology to lighten discoloration of the skin inhibits the synthesis of melanin through the inhibition of tyrosinase, it is also cytotoxic to melanocytes. Because of the serious side effects it was formally withdrawn from use in cosmetics in the European Union. Its place was taken by, among others, arbutin, which inhibits tyrosinase activity without cytotoxic effect on melanocytes. In the article, in addition to data on the in vivo activity of hydroquinone and arbutin are also quoted the results of research into the monobezoic and monomethyl hydroquinone ethers and other, less common, derivatives of hydroquinone.
