Plant raw materials are a very rich source of substances with moisturizing properties. One of the plants with such properties is Aloe vera (L.) Burm NL., now a very popular ingredient of cosmetics. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the skin hydration effect of cosmetic formulations containing 5% of Aloe vera gel, after a 1-, 2- and 3-week period of application, by using skin bioengineering techniques and to indicate functionality of application (the use) of Aloe vera gel in skin moisturizing cosmetics. Material and methods. Skin condition of 26 people was analyzed in terms of the water content of the stratum corneum and of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) (CorneometerTM CM 825 and TewameterTM TM 210). Volunteers applied the cream containing 5% of Aloe vera gel on their left side of facial skin and the control cream on their right side of it. The water content of the stratum corneum and transepidermal water loss were measured before and after 1-, 2- and 3-week period of twice a day application. Results. After 3-week period of application of both creams twice a day water content of the stratum corneum increased and transepidermal water loss decreased. The water content of the stratum corneum was higher and TEWL was lower after application the cream containing 5% of Aloe vera gel in comparison of the control cream. The control cream was not so effective. Conclusions. The study suggests that addition 5% of Aloe vera gel evidently improves the moisturizing effect of cosmetic formulations by increasing the water content of the stratum corneum and decreasing TEWL.
