Summary
Sea buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) is an interesting plant, for long time known as remedial raw material, nutritious product, as well as natural resource for skin care. The unique chemical composition of Sea buckthorn´s fruits and leaves offers a possibility to produce a wide range of nutritive, pharmaceutical, remedial products, as well as cosmetics and nutricosmetics. Used in popular medicine for centuries, Sea buckthorn is currently used also to cure digestive, urogenital and cardiovascular ailments. Moreover, it can be used in the treatment of inflammations, wounds, chilblains, erosions, sunstrokes as well as other injuries of mucous membrane and skin. Research indicates that apart from antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral properties, Sea buckthorn has also nourishing, regenerative, soothing, emollient, anti-radiation and anti-wrinkle properties. Oil extracted from sea buckthorn fruits and seeds contains large amounts of unsatturated fatty acids, natural antioxidants, vitamins, carotenoids and phytosterols, indispensible for proper skin functioning, which makes it an ideal cosmetic component. Traditional use of Sea buckthorn, supported by modern scientific research, offers new possibilities of application of this valuable plant in cosmetology.
