They are obtained from plants or animals. Their synthesis from plant tissues is rather simple, while their absorbing from animal organs is very controversial. It is connected with putting animals to death or their expensive breeding. As a result synthetic substances are searched by cosmetics and perfume industry in order to substitute natural substances derived from animals. The aim of this paper is to describe the main features of natural substances that originate from animals that are used in perfume production. Therefore the most popular substances such as ambergris derived from cachalot (Physeter macrocephalus), musk from Syberian musk deer (Moschus moschiferus), civet from Indian civet (Viverra zibetha), castoreum from Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) or Canadian beaver (Castor canadensis) are described. Additionally, animal pheromones are presented with the special emphasis on human pheromones. Key words: aromatic substances, ambergris, musk, civet, castoreum, pheromones |
