Summary
Ageing of the skin is a physiological phenomenon resulting from two parallel processes: endogenous ageing and exogenous ageing. Endogenous factors include chronological and hormonal ageing. The most important exogenous factors include ultraviolet radiation and tobacco smoking.
The increasing knowledge about mechanisms of ageing allows to employ effective methods for slowing the process. The local therapy, with the use of active substances like UV filters, antioxidants, retinoids, alpha hydroxyl acids and phytoestrogens, plays an important role. Local care in cosmetology practice is commonly used together with intervention methods which allows to maximize effects of skin revitalization. Among intervention methods, the highest effectiveness characterizes RF (radio frequency) irradiation, epidermis exfoliation with the use of alpha hydroxyl acids or microdermabrasion, injections of botulinum toxin or dermal fillers, as well as mesotherapy. Hyaluronic acid is a very important active substance used in mesotherapy and tissue filling treatments. When given to the skin, it assures its proper hydration. It has also the free radicals scavenging activity and thus protects the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids. Anti-ageing prevention should begin as soon as possible and continue throughout life to prevent the effects of endogenous and exogenous ageing.
