Although striae distensae do not cause health problems, they are recognized as aesthetic defect and may affect self-esteem. The aim of this paper was to identify risk factors associated with striae distensae development and evaluation of phototype and skin pigmentation as risk factors of striae not associated with pregnancy. Material and method. A study was conducted among 58 women aged 24.57±3.24 years, who had never been pregnant. The group was divided into two subgroups: the studied - 46 women with striae distensae and the controls - 12 women without the lesions. Participants were asked to fill in the questionnaire and had pigmentation measurements performed. Results. No significant differences were found in phototype among women with striae and those without the lesions (p>0.05). Statistical analysis did not show any relevant differences in pigmentation indices between the studied groups. Indices: M, E, R, G, B, L, a and b of the left and right arms in both groups were similar (p>0.05). Conclusions. 1. Localization of striae distensae is differential, the lesions are multifocal, and the most common sites are: thighs, buttocks and hips. 2. The most common causes of striae distensae development are: puberty, rapid growth and increase or decrease in weight 3. No correlation was observed between skin phototype and pigmentation assessed on the basis of erythema and melanin indices and development of striae distensae.
