Ultraviolet radiation as a factor inducing extrinsic aging of the skinAgnieszka Dana Zakład Kosmetologii Wydziału Farmaceutycznego Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Łodzi Summary The ultraviolet radiation initiates forming many adverse changes in the skin, among other things it is considered to be one of the main factors causing extrinsic aging of the skin, known as photoaging. As a result of the AP-1 activation, oxidative stress, secretion of metalloproteinases and mitochondrial DNA damage caused by the ultraviolet, the photoaging is different from chronoaging (intrinsic aging) for both clinical and histological presentations. Accurate knowledge of photodamage mechanisms would allow the use of new preventive and therapeutic strategies warding off and coping with skin symptoms resulting from chronic effects of the ultraviolet radiation. Key words: ultraviolet radiation, photoaging, AP-1, metalloproteinases, oxidative stress |
