Polyphenols, included in plant extracts, thanks to their multifunctionality are valuable ingredients of cosmetics. Application of them allows to eliminate the need of use of many compounds to give the expected therapeutic benefits to the skin. Aim. The aim of this study was to formulate, prepare and analyse the original multifunctional emulsions for dry skin containing plant extracts rich in polyphenols. Material and methods. Six commercial cosmetic plant extracts (Arnica montana, Betula alba, Malpighia punicifolia, Rosa canina, Sambucus nigra and Tilia cordata) and wheat germ oil were used to formulate five multifunctional emulsions intended for dry skin care. Sensory analysis was chosen to compare parameters of prepared cosmetics with basic emulsion. Results. Application of plant extracts and wheat germ oil allowed to formulate multifunctional emulsions, which do not only aid to struggle with dryness, but also with such coexisting problems as hyperpigmentations, allergy, dilated capillaries and wrinkles. Conducted sensory analysis showed similar or better scores for all original formulations compared with basic emulsion. Consistency, uniformity, smoothing, fatting and greasing turned out to be the best evaluated parameters of all prepared formulations. Analysis found that original multifunctional emulsions are proper cosmetics for dry skin care. Conclusions. This study proved that plant extracts, rich in polyphenols, in multifunctional formulations show comprehensive cosmetic activity. It is important for demanding consumers, who struggle with dryness of the skin. Key words: polyphenols, plant extracts, multifunctional ingredients, cosmetics |
