Summary
The in vitro release studies of active substances with the usage of dialysis membrane imitating the skin barrier has been carried on by the global pharmaceutical corporations for many years. However, the official procedures for dermatological preparations (ointments, gels, creams) has not been specified yet. Therefore, various methods and apparatus has been applied to estimate the release kinetics and process order of the bioactive substances from semisolid dosage forms to receptor fluid. These methods enable also to define the properties of the mass transfer area of the investigated dialysis membrane at the phase boundary.
The article reviews the most important aspects of active substance release from dermatological preparations, in particular experiment conditions, membranes, receptor fluids and apparatus.

Key words: dermatological preparations, release studies, membranes, release kinetics
