Summary
Skin immune system constitute a protective mechanism against infections agents such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. On cellular level this process comprises a various cell population - to struggle with pathogenic microorganisms - including Langerhans cell, T lymphocytes and keratinocytes.
Herpesviruses and Papoviruses are responsible for the most popular skin viral infection. Herpes simplex is highly contagious and can appear as cold sores, genital inflammation and conjunctivitis. Skin bacterial pathogens belongs to genus Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Propionibacterium. It was shown that Staphylococcus aureus is infection agent of folliculitis; Streptococcus pyogenes cause erysipelas, cellulites and, impetigo contagiosa, Propionibacterium acnes lead to different type of acne.
The last but not least group of skin pathogen are fungi. There are two major causes of fungal infection of the skin and nails: yeast and dermatophytes. Yeast infection are general cause by Candida albicans. Dermatophytes belong to genera Microsporum, Epidermophyton and Trichophyton.
