Dermoscopy (epiluminescence microscopy) is a useful tool, most widely known for its use in diagnosing pigmented lesions, mainly pigmented nevi. However, imaging possibilities of this method can also be used in differential diagnosis of inflammatory dermatoses, as well as various forms of alopecia. Modern esthetic treatments often require photographic documentation and archiving of images of treated lesions, as well as minimally invasive diagnostic procedures for preliminary diagnosis and evaluation of the final outcomes of dermatological treatment. There is ongoing search for quick, convenient, reproducible and safe diagnostic methods and imaging techniques of skin lesions before esthetic procedures, observation of post-treatment outcomes as well as differential diagnosis of selected dermatological diseases in diagnostically doubtful cases. Aim. The aim of this paper is to review possible uses of dermoscopy in esthetic medicine. Material and methods. Based on personal experience and a literature review from the years 2000-2010, a novel classification of dermoscopy applications in the diagnosis and follow-up of selected dermatological diseases qualifying for procedures of esthetic medicine (peeling, laser therapy, Intense Pulse Light - IPL) was done. Conclusions. Dermoscopy is an essential tool for differential diagnosis of pigmented and vascular lesions and qualification of selected conditions (e.g. seborrhoeic warts, venous lakes, solar keratosis and many others) for esthetic procedures.
