Summary
Kombucha has been used for ages in many parts of the world. It is especially popular in Japan, Russia, China and Eastern Europe. In unconventional medicine, the Kombucha beverage was used as a universal medicament, strengthening the human organism and helpful in many medical conditions.
Kombucha, often referred to as mushroom, is not a single organism but a culture containing a symbiosis of different bacteria and yeast. Kombuchka (a trademarked name) is a new active component used in cosmetic formulas. It is obtained by the fermentation of black or green tea, saccharose and symbiotic microorganisms.
Based on the so far identified composition of Kombucha, we may assume it has a favorable effect on skin. The most important components of the fermented beverage include: organic acids (acetic, lactic, gluconic and glucuronic), B-vitamins, vitamin C and the ions of zinc, copper, iron and magnesium. Due to its valuable composition and specific properties, Kombucha is increasingly often used in cosmetic industry as a modern active component. It is present mainly in anti-wrinkle creams, skin and hand regenerating creams, in mild peeling, moisturizing, soothing and skin tone improving products.
