Application of B vitamins in cosmetic preparations

Summary
Background. Chemical compounds, being part of B-vitamin complex and used in cosmetic compositions, favourably affect the condition of dermal cells.
Aim. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the application of B-vitamins in cosmetic preparations.
Material and methods. 92 cosmetic preparations, containing at least one water-soluble B-vitamin were studied.
Results. Among the B-vitamins, pantothenic acid and its derivatives were most often present in the analysed cosmetic preparations, constituting the total of 48.9% of the studied cosmetics. Nicotinamide with its derivatives was present in 22.8% of the analysed cosmetics while folic acid with its derivatives was found in 7.6% of these preparations. Pyridoxine with its derivatives and biotin were found in 6.5% of the studied material.
Conclusions. 1. Vitamins are more and more frequently used for cosmetic preparations, having the function of of antioxidants, epidermal keratosis regulators and hydrating-softening substances. 2. B-vitamins are used in different forms of cosmetics: shampoos, gels, hair masques and conditioners, tonics, balms, care creams, nutritive masques and after tan cosmetics. 3. Vitamin B5 was most often found in the studied preparations in a form of D-panthenol. It was mainly present in the preparations having an abirritant, soothing, hydrating, regenerating and protective effect.
