Summary
Preservatives are indispensable ingredients of cosmetic product that ensure their long shelf life and anti-microbial protection. Use of the most allergenic agents is being restricted and prohibited, nevertheless preservatives are among the most allergenic ingredients of cosmetics, second only to fragrances. Results of multicenter European studies indicate, that prevalence of preservatives allergy has increased over recent years. Formalin and formalin-releasing agents, especially Quatrenium 15, are the most allergenic. The diagnosis of preservatives allergy is based on epidermal patch tests, which are the "gold standard" in contact allergy detection.
