Summary
Cytokinins are a group of a plant hormones participating in plant growth and development. They influence many processes in plants, from seed germination to senescence. Quite well-known cytokinins are kinetin and benzyladenine. For a long time they have been though as a purely synthetic compounds. Recently is was found that they also occur in living organisms. Kinetin is consider as a natural antioxidant and its biosynthesis - as a "free radical sink". It demonstrates anti-aging properties, both in vitro and in vivo. It was also shown that it acts favorably on animals and human skin. Benzyladenine and its derivatives influence on cell cycle regulation, because they inhibit several important protein kinases. That´s why they are consider as a new potential anti-cancer drugs. They also demonstrate anti-TNF-α and anti-PDE activity and they stimulate melanogenesis process. Possibilities of using kinetin and benzyladenine in cosmetics and medicine seem to be more and more wide, but they are still in research phase.
