Evaluation of the aesthetic results of posttraumatic scars surgical treatment

Summary
Introduction. There are many surgical, pharmacological and physical methods of scars treatment, which aim at removing functional or aesthetic disorders, and surgical excision is one of the most frequently used in case of posttraumatic scars.
Aim. The aim of this research is to evaluate late aesthetic results of surgical treatment of posttraumatic scars.
Material and methods. The results of surgical treatment of posttraumatic scars were evaluated in a group of 31 patients of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Medical University of Lodz, Poland on the basis of complete and standardized photographical documentation including scars photographs made before the operation and minimum 6 months after. Scars were evaluated before and after surgical treatment and the following features were assessed: width, thickness, color, direction and adjacent tissues deformation. The final result was obtained from a sum of the points on which all of scar´s features were assessed.
Results. After surgical treatment scars appearance improved significantly in the aspect of width, color and adjacent tissues deformation. The mean total score including all of the analyzed scars features before surgery was 4.64, and after surgical treatment - 1.87 (p<0.05).
Conclusions. 1. Surgical treatment of posttraumatic scars is associated with a good aesthetic results if operation method is adequately chosen. 2. Surgical treatment of scars significantly reduces their width, adjacent tissues deformation and improves their color.
