Summary
Glucosamine is an amino sugar, a constituent of nearly each tissue in the human organism. Although it was obtained 125 years ago, only now the investigations on its properties and activity are being carried out. It is used both by young people, most frequently those taking part in competitive sports, and the elderly, suffering from rheumatoid osteoarthrosis. The main effect of glucosamine involves maintaining healthy locomotor system, and particularly joints. Due to a rather short history of the use of glucosamine preparations in medical practice, it has not been described in any pharmacopoeia so far.

Key words: glucosamine, articular chondrus, chondroitin
