Aloe creams of antifungal activityTeresa Bujak, Marian M. Zgoda, Kazimiera H. Bodek Katedra Farmacji Stosowanej, Uniwersytet Medyczny w Łodzi Summary Aloe extract has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, regenerating and light-protective properties and 5% creams may be applied in the treatment of dermatomycoses. Silicea - silica obtained from Equisetum arvense increases immunity to mycoses and bacterial infections. Aim. The aim of the study was to determine pharmaceutical availability of aloenin in freshly made antifungal creams containing aloe dry extract from fresh Aloe Arborescens Mill. Material and methods. The technology of a few antifungal creams with aloe and aloe with clotrimazole has been worked out. The analysis of aloenin pharmaceutical availability in the tested creams was performed with the static method based on the dialysis of an active substance through Tomofan semipermeable membrane in Mutimer apparatus. Direct spectrophotometric method was used in chemical analysis to determine active substances converted to aloenin. Pharmaceutical availability of the tested creams was determined with biopharmaceutical parameters i.e. constant of release rate (k) and half-time of release (t50%). Results. The results of the tests of aloenin content in the analysed material enable to include this compound to the group of compounds dominating in the chemical composition of Aloe Arborescens plants grown in greenhouses of Herbal Works "Herbapol" S.A. in Klęka. Furthermore, the usefulness of the suggested cream vehicles was tested on the basis of aloenin release from aloe creams. Conclusions. The selected Tomofan dialysis membrane gave comparable results in the determinations of pharmaceutical availability and is very useful in testing aloenin pharmaceutical availability from the investigated creams. Propylene glycol is a good promoter of aloenin release from the tested creams and the literature data suggest that introduction of propylene glycol increases therapeutic activity of clotrimazole in dermatophytic dermatomycoses.
