Summary
Use of cosmetics seems to be an indispensable element of the contemporary civilization and culture. As application of cosmetics becomes common, more and more side effects and allergic reactions can be observed following their application. There are many components in cosmetics that may be the source of an allergy, however hitherto research indicates that oversensitivity is most often caused by aromatic substances, preservatives and dye.
Aromatic substances can be found in the majority of cosmetic products. It is estimated that c.a. 1-6% of the total population is allergic to fragrance, which is most often manifested by contact eczema. Epidermal patch tests with perfume mixture (PM) are used in allergy diagnosis caused by aromatic substances. Oversensitivity to PM occurs in 50-80% of population allergic to aromatic substances.
