Summary
Vitamin E is one the most frequently used components of pharmaceutical preparations used in skin diseases and cosmetic components as it plays an important role in the skin protection against reactive oxygen species, one of the skin ageing factors. Moreover, it was observed that vitamin E, as a physiological component of cellular membranes, is responsible for their stability and proper level of fibroblasts moisture. Tocopherols are used in cosmetic preparations for dehydrated and damaged skin. Preparations with vitamin E moisten and grease the skin and it becomes smoother and better-toned. It is mainly connected with vitamin E antioxidative abilities although it is not the only aspect of its activity.
On the basis of numerous studies, both in vivo and in vitro, it has been revealed that vitamin E plays an important role in regulation of many cellular functions on DNA level, by the influence on gene expression.

Key words: vitamin E, antioxidant properties, cellular metabolism, fibroblast, skin ageing factors
