Summary
Introduction. Yeast was used as early as in antiquity as a medicine for cutaneous and haemorrhoidal diseases, as an agent against pustules, skin oedema, and to treat burn wounds. It was also combined with other substances: compresses with myrtle softened inflammatory foci, whereas when cooked with figs it was used against lichen, itching eczema and to treat ulceration. Presently, many cosmetics containing yeast are produced.
Aim. The aim was to confirm positive effects of cosmetics containing a yeast extract, designed against striae.
Material and methods. The study was carried out on a group of six women. Pictures and measurements had been made before the cosmetics were used and on the 30th day after the end of the therapy.
Results. All patients exhibited a considerable increase in their skin´s elasticity. Striae became less visible, more shallow and smaller. The lesions´ width was reduced on average by 1mm, whereas their length was reduced on average by 8.33cm. The average increase of the moistening of the skin subjected to the procedures was 8.4%, while greasing increased by 19.4%. In case of new striae the effects are much better, but even long-lasting lesions became more shallow and less visible.
Conclusions. The studies using the latest knowledge and specialistic apparatus indicate that the importance of yeast for normal functioning of our organisms, treatment of pathological changes and removal of cosmetic defects gives better and better effects and finds more and more applications.
