The role of antioxidants in prevention and treatment of chosen diseases

Summary
Antioxidants play an important role in the prevention of organism against the negative influence of reactive oxygen species. In this article the results of studies on the influence of antioxidants on the development and progression of many diseases (e.g. cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders and eye diseases) are presented. In these experiments the influence of dietary antioxidant intake as well as the effect of diet supplementation were examined. Additionally, as reactive oxygen species play a crucial role in the development of skin irritation and damage, the results of studies on the protective activity of antioxidants on skin after oral or topical administration are described. Data concerning safety of the long-term supplementation of some antioxidants are also presented.
