Lipoic acid in cosmetology and dermatologyBarbara Bednarczyk-Cwynar, Lucjusz Zaprutko Katedra i Zakład Chemii Organicznej Wydział Farmaceutyczny Akademii Medycznej im. Karola Marcinkowskiego w Poznaniu Summary Healthy-looking skin is a sign of good physical health of the entire body. As humans age, the function of the skin gradually deteriorates, with wrinkles developing as the most visible external symptom of aging changes occurring in the skin. Wrinkles are a consequence of a wide range of external factors reducing skin activity, e.g. free radicals. The level of free radicals in the body is regulated by the so-called antioxidants, one of them being lipoic acid which is contained in a number of food products. The substance can also be obtained synthetically. Thanks to its numerous beneficial characteristics, e.g. good water- and fat-solubility, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effect, photoprotective and antioxidizing properties, lipoic acid is widely used in cosmetics to produce a wide range of facial and body care products and skin protection formulas demonstrating mostly anti-wrinkle effect. Key words: lipoic acid, antioxidants, lipoic-acid containing cosmetics |
