Summary
Introduction. At the time of the everlasting fashion of the suntan and fast development of the solarium market the people are excessively exposed to UV radiation all year round, which can induce many disadvantageous effects. A reasonable exposure to ultraviolet requires an appropriate knowledge on UV hazardous effects.
Objective. This research has been aimed at evaluation of the society´s awareness of the impact of ultraviolet radiation on human health as well as tracing the habits and behaviours during exposure to the sun and artificial sources of UV.
Material and methods. Participating in the study were 184 persons, both women and men, of different age groups, different educational background, residing in the countryside or big and small towns. The research method was a questionnaire consisting of 20 questions: closed, i.e. containing various given variants of answers, and open questions which did not constrain the respondents by the possibilities offered in the questionnaire.
Results. Most (45.1%) respondents get suntanned only during summer holidays. 40.8% do not avoid strong radiation at midday, whereas 13.6% of the respondents never use the sun protective preparations. 21.4% of the respondents did not mention any negative effect of UV on human organism.
Conclusions. The respondents´ awareness of negative effects of suntanning is insufficient. The information about the effects of ultraviolet on human health and sun protection should be imparted through mass media.

Key words: ultraviolet, solarium, melanoma, sun protection
