Marek Cieśliński, Paweł Idowski

Zakład Syntezy i Technologii Środków Leczniczych Wydziału Farmaceutycznego Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Łodzi

Summary
This article deals with common hop (Humulus lupulus), especially with its properties and applications. The male inflorescences, i.e. cones, contain many active substances, therefore they are widely used not only in food processing, where they are mainly used for the production of beer, but also in medicine, herbalism, and cosmetology. Of special interest seem to be its antibacterial and estrogenic effects. At present hop is sometimes used in pharmacy as a component of soothing and diastolic mixtures; in cosmetics it is used in hair strengthening shampoos, bath lotions, and anti-ageing preparations.

Key words: common hop, hop cones, antibacterial and estrogenic effects
