Substances with keratolytic action used in foot preparationsNatalia Ząbczyńska Studenckie Koło Naukowe przy Katedrze i Zakładzie Biofizyki w Sosnowcu, Wydział Nauk Farmaceutycznych w Sosnowcu, Śląski Uniwersytet Medyczny w Katowicach Summary Hyperkeratotic changes growing in the foot area, and the discomfort that they generate, makes it necessary to look for preparations rich in ingredients whose action will effectively reduce the problem of accumulation of the epidermal skin and protect the skin from their return. Keratolytic substances, among them hydroxy acids, play an important role in maintaining the normal condition of the foot skin. Their mechanism of action, involving the dissolution and exfoliation of the keratotic and sebaceous masses, with the activation of repair mechanisms, allows the normal structure and function of the skin to be maintained. The aim of this study is to present the most common hyperkeratotic changes developing in the foot area. The characteristics of the changes, such as corns and calluses, are presented. Understanding the structure of the skin and the processes leading to the formation of these lesions makes it possible to select cosmetic preparations. The analysis of cosmetic preparations describes the mechanism of action of keratolytic agents and focuses on active substances from the group of hydroxy acids, specifying exemplary and representative compounds from the group: α-, β- and polyhydroxy acids. Key words: corns, calluses, keratolytic substances, hydroxy acids |
